South Korea's Health Ministry reported on Sunday seven new cases of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, or MERS, bringing the total to 145 in an outbreak that the World Health Organization called 'large and complex.' The outbreak is the largest outside Saudi Arabia, where the disease was first identified in humans in 2012, and has stirred fears in Asia of a repeat of a 2002-2003 scare when Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) killed about 800 people worldwide.
Mount Sinabung, a volcano in western Indonesia, erupted on Saturday, sending hot ash far down the mountain's slopes. No injuries were reported, but more than 2,700 people have been evacuated from villages within the danger zone. The volcano has been sporadically erupting since 2010 and is among about 130 active volcanoes in Indonesia, which is prone to seismic upheaval due to its location on the Pacific 'Ring of Fire.'
